Well here is testament that use by dates are all rubbish if you store things correctly.

Check out the Best Before Date on this Coles brand Yoghurt below .............

And the date today is the 2nd day of January 2017 and I opened it this morning.

Here's the contents after consuming half of it ...........

Well I'm still here and have no issues as I'm still typing away.

So the moral to the story is that if you keep most things stored at the back of the fridge so that it stays at a constant temperature it will stay fine for many months past its use by date.

I did the same experiment with a carton of milk at a Service Station I used to work at and kept it well hidden at the back of the cold room and pulled it out 6 months later only to find it was still OK for consumption.

I have always said that these dates are a marketing ploy by the companies to simply throw out stock that you and I pay for in the long run.

Your thoughts ????

Cheers,
BB.

Best before is only a recommendation as to when the quality may not be up to expectation and a product can still be lawfully sold after that date. Some products with a best before date may still be perfectly okay a year or more after that. Use by however is an indication that after that time harmful bacteria may start to multiply in the product to levels that can be dangerous or even fatal and it is illegal to sell products past their use by date.

USE BY and BEST BEFORE mustn't be confused.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

This.

That said, with quite a few unsweetened dairy products, they can keep for amazingly long times if you're scrupulously careful to avoid inoculating the stuff with greeblies [micro-organisms]. Plain yoghurt and high-fat cream [45% butterfat], to name a couple.

The simplest way to do this, is to use only a freshly-scalded [i.e. well rinsed with boiling water] metal spoon to extract the stuff from the jar, and not to leave the lid off any longer than necessary. Get it back into the fridge promptly, too.

Cheers,
Gadge
