Basically your saying that the HD8 term belongs to the red machines and 'super' to the yellow ones? That's interesting. I'd been given to think that the HD8 term only started with the yellows as there is no HD8 decals or reference to the term on the IPC for the red girls. You raise an interesting point here, prd. Use of the 'HD8' designation for the 'old red' Greenfields is really just a habit we've got into at ODK, as a shorthand moniker for the 'second model' series. And that may not be quite accurate! That said, far from all of the 'third model' yellow 'Super 8's' we've seen have the HD8 decal on them, either. The red machine pictured in this thread is apparently the very rare 'first model' Greenfield, going by its design features. It's quite possible that the dual rear wheels are a factory option - they are mentioned in ads for the second and third model series, but are not shown in the IPL for either of those models. Ah!, a bolt on double pulley. That makes sense. Not quite so easy to fit as the arrangement with the dog clutch perhaps but given the extremely poor sales it's purely academic, I guess. Well, the dog clutch setup wasn't there so much for easy detachment, but to make it possible to disengage the cutter drive. We had one of those red painted T-piece PTO mounts in stock for years - it probably went to scrap when the business was sold. It's all history now anyway...
Cheers, Gadge

G'day again Gadge, Ok, so the duals WERE an option! That updates me. I've suggested more than once that they must an afterthought. Live and learn. True, the dog clutch was for 'clutching' but also made a nice disconnection point Cheers

Perhaps another coup for you gml. Not only a VERY straight series one Greenie but the only set of duals, which, it appears, were at some point in time a factory option, Ive ever seen. Seems you were right to keep them. And shoot, they just add street cred anyway!

G'day all Greenies It's a fascinating and important story this one. Every post we seem to glean more info and a better common-language about these lawn tractors. I feel Gadge's view on the dual wheel option is a good one. I see dual wheel options have been offered on many machines - the main purpose being for bank work or soft ground issues. AS Gadge says, they were options found in later machines:- Cheers------------------ Jack

Jack, Were the sideburns an optional extra or were those standard equipment in the seventies? Interested to see that brochure in full too. Cheers,

G'day prd
Fair question... I don't know how they got Elvis Costello to be the model. The seeming replacement for the '70s 'cool' is the nowaday 'Hipster'.
Hipsters are more defined by beards, rather than side-burns. I feel I am subliminally advocating a return of the sideburn. Did I say 'sideburn'? I meant, 'SIDEBURN'.
The brochure is an interesting one and I will put it up ASAP. I just have to visit the barber first.

I'd just like to point out that not everyone sporting a beard these days is a hipster.

Jack, Were the sideburns an optional extra or were those standard equipment in the seventies? Well, that bloke still had 'em in 1971! ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/10/full-5630-17903-greenfield_newspaper_pic_1971.png) Excerpt from a 1971 newspaper advertorial.

G'day 'dddd' and gml gml is right. Yours are classic examples of early 'red' greenies and fit between gml's chronologically. His red is an example of the first model (we think) and his yellow Is one of the latest of that shape. I think I can make out that the spare chassis frame has the early style front axle beam pivot that is of welded flat plate and the other has the 'formed' pivot. This indicates the spare frame is slightly older. Stooge around. There are a few threads on the dating of these things. The G80 (and the bonnet cutout) is an afterthought as gml says. Gadge comments on this in another thread only last week- the G80 came along in the mid seventies and your machines are from the late sixties. That said, I reckon maybe I'd keep it that way! The modification and the G80 is part of that machines history and the G80 in itself is an historic artefact. And it's a bit of fun! The most monster 'red' Greenie seen to date A good find. Have fun! Cheers P.S. The drive clutch/pulley on the front of the 80 looks a bit different. P.P.S. And the funky welded on pulley/clutch on the RH side of the frame.?? Might need to look into that......?
