Hi

I have a Masport XRS60 mower with a B & S motor. Ive just cleaned it and suchlike but there seems to be a return spring (?) missing on the air throttle control. Engine is easy to start and runs like a train...but I cant regulate the engine revs so it just sits on max revs. There is a (yellow) spring that regulates the butterfly valve opening, but then there's nothing to close it off. I pulled the mower apart and traced the linkage to a rod that goes into the engine crankcase, but again there isn't any return pressure to regulate the carby.

I can lower the revs by manually manipulating the butterfly throttle, but as soon as I let it go it just flips back to max revs.

I could probably jury-rig a spring to do the work, but it still doesn't solve the problem of why the linkages don't work properly.

Any ideas?

Post the model and type numbers of the Briggs so we can see how the governor is setup on your engine.

Either it has air vane or internal governor. Either way there is no spring to return to idle. The air vane version uses the air pressure against the spring to close the throttle butterfly vane and the internal does a similar way but it uses spinning weights acting against the spring. But I doubt it is using both methods at the same time. The air vane may just be a auto choke control.

If an internal governor setup then either the static governor adjustment is off or the governor has failed. On the air vane version the air vane could be sticking or not receiving air flow.

Details are: Masport XRS 60 mower/Combo 3 in 1 Multi
couldn't find a stamp on the engine, but didn't really want to take it apart (again) to try to find out if its in a different spot to usual.
There were a couple of stickers which had the following numbers
YBSXS.190VC 2743543566 and 1167197

I took some photos of the unit but need guidance on how to get the photos into the post, as copy/past and drag/drop don't seem to work.

Ive looked up B&S governor info and will adjust the governor according to specs tomorrow. Hopefully this will solve the problem, as I took it all apart today (the carby et al) and wasn't aware that the governor had to be re-specced.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Steve and welcome to the forum. Post the pics before you play with the governor and we'll see if anything is evident form the photos.

Hi Ted

Thanks for the welcome smile

These are a few pics from around the mower and one from the carby and linkages. It seems from watching a few videos Ive not set the governor up correctly so will sort that out and see if it fixes the problem. (apologies for the blurred one...no idea why but it will give an idea of what sort of mower it is at least).

Ok all good.

Adjusted the governor correctly and the mower is fine. It seems to leak a bit of oil from around the seal of the filler pipe, but that's just a poor design fault and I will replace the seal if it gets annoying. Needs a new air filter to complete the job and the mower will be good for a few laps yet.

Thanks for the input, gents.

smile

Steve
