Having trouble finding the right recoil starter for my mower. The results on the Briggs website show a different engine. Im hoping someone can link me to the correct part.

Note that the starter shown as #608 is the late type; used after Code 97060600. The earlier starter has some differing bits, which aren't shown as an assembly - notably the Starter Clutch #66, a different pulley #56 and Spring #57. The late type uses a flywheel cup, and the corresponding pawl setup shown under illustration 608.

This is the only IPL that the B&S search engine brings up for that exact Model and Type Number combo; that search can be broadened by being less specific, e.g. by using Model Number only. But that can give you a lot of pages to look through.

Are you looking for a complete assembly or parts to repair one? If you can upload a photo of what you need there is a good chance I or someone here will have it.

To OP, There may a good why your finding a different engine. Many older engines sometimes an engine shroud change out and the correct number are never transfer to the replacement cover. This can lead to confusion and the wrong part installed later.

These shroud changes are done by inexperienced techs and owners not knowing just because a cover fit doesn't it has the right numbers on it when later repairs are needed. I have ran into this a couple times so far and it makes hard to find the right parts.

Totally agree and what is worst is those stupid decal versions that i have been seeing. If it weren't for keeping the customer numbers on file here there would more problems.

So what are you saying AVB, engine numbers now are only a sticker on the cowl, that will certainly become a headache down the road if anybody tries to repair one. I guess the manufacturer doesn't care and if you can't work out what the motor is you will have to buy a new one and that is in the manufacturers interest. I doubt that in another 20 years people would be bothered restoring these mass produced Chinese motor mowers anyway

Im looking for a complete recoil starter, it looks as though its housing is part of the blower housing so even a complete blower housing with starter will do me.

I play with outboards and their identification numbers are mostly on stickers now. Fortunately you can usually find just a serial number stamped in a welsh plug, still doesnt help with model and year.

I just noticed how bad the base of your mower is. Too bad you are so far away, I have one of those bases in perfect condition sitting in the spares pile. Alternatively I have an alloy one in excellent condition as well.

Have you tried repairing it?
You can service all the parts in the starter set ups.

For a while they stamped them on a separate metal plate, sat over the muffler.

I've only struck that setup on the Briggs Quantum series, on the heat deflector plate above the big Lo-Tone muffler.

The numbers are still stamped in the metal cowling as well on those, but that's normally covered by the plastic outer cowling.

Not worth my time when I can get another one with the same rusty patina as mine for just $20

The base looks worse then it is, shame I cant get the alloy one, sounds fast. ill send you a pm if the board allows me.

You wouldn't want to pay more than $15 for a complete mower with that sort of patina, not just the cowl

I usually take these things to the swap meet and put $1 on it, none have ever sold... Going to take them to the scrap soon.

How come I can get a $2 item sent from China with free or perhaps $1 postage and have it delivered to my door in less time than it takes a parcel to come from Sydney and if I ordered that same part from NSW the postage would be at least $7?

That is a question nobody can answer, I can order a part from China for less than $1 with free postage and Australia Post delivers it to my house

I think that we are subsidizing foreign countries postal services Norm, something that is obviously not reciprocated as it costs a damn arm and a leg to send even a small item overseas, and heaven forbid you should want tracking so some low life doesn't steal it before it even gets out of the country. I noticed on my last order of carbide slot drills that came in from China that they came via DHL satchel and then via Auspost from Brisbane, and they arrived in 4 days and still was free postage.

It is the same way here on this side of the big pond. I can order parts in relatively low cost but costs an arm and leg most time to return or when sending them out to others. Sometimes they even want the first born too.

I had brake controller that was shipped in for 4 dollars shipping but cost nearly 20 dollars shipping to return the same defective part. Sometimes it is not even worth the effort to return defective items due to costs.

Personally it looks like China and other big businesses has got the rest of the world by the family jewels. On top of that we the consumers and small businesses end up having make up all that low cost shipping whenever we ship out items.
