Hi all,

I have picked up a cylinder mower as outlined above and have a few questions as I can't find anything on the net about this mower.

But first some background. I got some of adelaide oval (pitch and outfield) when it got replaced, and I replaced my lawn. I thought that it was only proper to mow with a good machine. This mower I saw on gumtree, had a look, an old guy had passed away some 6 years previous, so it was a non goer. I got it home for a pineapple, put new fuel in it and away she went, it runs so smooth.

All I have done is adjust the clearance and it does a great job. Other than a rust hole and a few dings in the catcher, there is nothing hat needs to be done to it.

So, what year is this beast? Where would I acquire a bed knife, or do I just get one made?
What might it be worth? Should I/ is it worth doing a full resto for this daily drive, keeping in mind my lawn size is v small, it will never wear out? Or do I just give it a quick slap of paint to stop the decay?

Regards

Mick

Hi Mick, as this machine appears to be all complete and original and running well, you now have the dreaded question in front of you....to conserve or restore.
I have the same decision to make with the 1958 ATCO 20" that I recently scored.....part of me would love to see it in 'as new' condition...new stickers and paint; but as it has been looked after well by the original owner since new, I have decided to conserve it in its present state.

I would, if I were you, consider removing the cylinder reel and soleplate with the bottom blade attached and take both to an engineer /machinist and have the reel spin ground and he could supply you with a new bottom blade and fit it for you, if needs be.
The cylinder reel bearings could be replaced at this time, because serviceable bearings are absolutely necessary to maintain the correct clearance and consequently the quality of cut.
This is what I will be doing with my ATCO shortly. wink
Mick, congrats on a great score!

Thanks deejay,

So, any idea of the year of this machine?

Next question might be where to go in adelaide to get it machined? I have been pointed in the direction of a guy in pooraka, sa knife sharpening or something similar to that, has anyone had any good experiences locally?
