I need to fit a useable brake on this machine because the original design only is a park brake that can't be used if the machine is moving. I'm looking at fitting a disc brake off a monkey bike or similar. Anybody have any ideas or tips?

Can you post some pics of where you plan on fitting the brake? A monkey bike or go cart does sound like a great source unless there's a brake you could pilfer from another ride on.

Slash, pics aren't my speiality, problem is the Stallion is a pretty small mower and there is not much room to mount the caliper. Just looking at it I'm wondering if I could mount a caliper to the drive sprocket, my only concern is fitting the caliper over the chain. I would need to look at a caliper and see what I could do with it

Sorry mate I am completely unfamiliar with your machine so may throw up some silly ideas. I reckon using the drive gear as a brake isn't the best idea. Don't forget brake discs wear and probably not the best to be wearing away the driver gear. Besides the chain is wider than the gear so you would need quite a wide calliper I reckon. I did have an old Murry I was given many moons ago and it used a small disc brake mounted to the back of the gear box. I have no idea how effective the brakes are were. I would probably look at copying the disc brake setup from a go cart with the disc mounted to the rear axle. I am sure someone much better informed will throw some ideas soon. Possibly utilising the setup from a mower a model or two newer. Just like upgrading the brakes on an old car.

Slash, I have given up on the drive gear idea, I will drop the rear axle out in the morning and see if I can fit a disc to it on the inside instead of trying to fit it between the frame and the inside of the wheel

Ok so I have the disc brake fitted and now I have to bleed it and because I had to make up the brake line in solid tube I am going to have to tip the mower on its side to get the bleeder high enough. I will drain the oil and petrol out first, any other thing I might need to do, Battery is a sealed unit so no prob there

You can get auto bleeders. Do you have any pics of the fit up I'd sure like to see. What donated it's brakes in the end?

Slash, I'll see what I can do about the pics, it is so tight in there, I have probably spent over 30 hours fitting it and I still haven't got all the air completely out, I'm going to have to tip it completely upside down to get the last bit out. This is all because the only place I could fit it in the end put the bleeder right on the bottom and I'm not sure how I could make up a flexible hose so I could remove the caliper and turn it upside down to bleed it. I ended up getting a new disc/caliper and master cylinder kit for an ATV for $50

To bleed the cars I use a length of hose from the bleeder nipple (size fit) into a jar with some old brake fluid so if it draws backwards its only drawing in fluid not air. If you do remove the calliper to bleed it up don't forget to put something in between the brake pads the same thickness as your disc or you'll pop out the piston and it might be a struggle to get the bloody thing back over the disc after it's bleld. Great thinking getting an ATV kit. Great price too.

Slash finally got it bled, must have turned the mower upside down half a dozen time before I got all the air out. Got the kit from Blygo over in Braeside. So is there a simple way to add pics, I can put them on Gumtree and Ebay no problems but not sure about here

At the bottom of the page is the quick reply section that I always use. There is a row of icons at the top, the first being a smiley face. click on the fifth icon, with the little blue arrow. A box opens up In the middle of the screen there's a white box that says "choose file" click it A new box opens up so you can find the pic on your computer. You will need to know the name of the file and where you left it. Maybe on the desktop or in a folder called "mowers" I am on a MacBook Air and take pics with my iPhone so my pics go to a folder called "photos" Click on the picture you want You will see on the bottom right a blue box appeaser that says "choose" click it That box will close and go back to the initial box where you clicked "choose file" last time this time click the box to its right that says "ad file from your pc" For me this takes a few minutes as my internet is as slow as I am. When it's loaded it will appear as a small pic on your screen. Click all done
I hope this is helpful as I am crummy at explaining things.

Looks like a bit of heartache there Norm but you've ended up with a well executed job. Does the disc mount to the back of the hub by the wheel studs? Now you've done the R&D the next one will be a piece of cake. Now the $64000 question, how does it work?

Slash I had to make up the hub, the disc just had a 50mm hole in it and with my little lathe and tools it takes a bit of time. So many little bits have to be made to make things work that all take time to work out and then make. Problem is no two are the same so if doing another one the R&D has to be done all again. How does it work, certainly locks the shaft up, haven't quite finished it but a road test should happen later today

Lucky bugger, I'd love to have a lathe at home. I'm trying to convince my boss to get one at work even though it really wouldn't get used for work.  I reckon those brakes will stop you on a dime.
