I have just acquired a Gilson 8hp rotary hoe along with its manual. The hoe is missing a belt and the manual does not list the belt size, just a part number. Can someone supply me the belt sizes for this hoe. And also was the Gilson also marketed under different names?

I picked up one from the dump shop some time back, but a 5HP model, that is also missing a belt, the reverse one. I got mine running by replacing the old points type coil with a later one but haven't figured out the size of the belt, or how it fits. Would love to see a scan from the manual if it has a picture showing the belts in the fitted positions.

I'll post a scan of the manual later today. Mine is also missing the reverse belt.

I hope something can be done here.
Gilson was such an old USA company that expired with a takeover in the late 1980s.

The Gilson was distributed in Australia by Rover mowers in the early 1980s.
However they remained branded as Gilsons.

We would need to know the model number to investigate more.

Thanks cyberjack, your assistance has been invaluable. Luckily i have the original booklet supplied with the tiller. With your information i have been able to determine the reverse belt size, 3/8 �39.
I have attached images from the manual relating to the belt, note that the reverse belt has a twist in it.

Thanks for the pictures, I couldn't see how the reverse was supposed to work but the twisted belt makes sense of it now. Is yours a running machine? And does it actually have a belt guard? Would love a photo of it in place if it has, or perhaps it is shown in the manual?
