Sorry for butting in on this, but I've just got my hands on a Victa ride on just like the one in the image that Bruce posted. It's a wee bit on the rusty side and needs plenty of TLC but my main question is, what vintage are these ride ons? Really good site here too Bruce.

thanks bruce! i have turned one of these into a go cart for all the 100's of kids that seem to congregate around our place, but want to re attach a deck and decent engine to make something of it. do you know weather there are cast iron flywheels available for the late model briggs quantrum engines? it is running one with a aluminium one but it bites when you go to pull the rope. regards jay

Sounds like an ignition timing error.

G'day, yeh ide agree accept ive alredy checked the flywheel key and made sure the magnetron is at the right distance from the flywheel. i believe the problem is that the pressed steel stack pulley is way to light to act in place of the blades as a flywheel apparatus. the original engine was one of the good old 5hp briggs i/c with the big very heavy cast iron flywheel. the thing about the kickback is when it gets to the compression stroke it kicks because there isn't enough momentum stored in the light flywheel to spin it easily threw the compression stroke. regards jay

Jay, Are the pulleys heavier than the flywheel?

G'day, you mean the stack pully? no it is not. the old cast iron flywheels are about 3kg wear as the aluminium ones are about 500 gms and the stack pulley is about 400gms. i dont really want to spend any money one one but if anyone has the appropriate cast iron flywheel for a 6hp briggs quantum please let me know. thanks regards jay

I acknowledge that it may be a flywheel issue, if you are trying to run it with a light flywheel and with no drive to the blade plates. B&S warn us against doing that, and it seems the obvious cause of the problem you are having. Is it the wrong engine for the mower (i.e. one that is made for a direct drive push-type mower, and hence has a light flywheel, but you are running it on a ride-on, which starts with the blade plates declutched)?

hi all, your spot on grumpy, the engine came of a mtd 18" mower with a standard bar blade. it was all i had at the time to put on there, and has lasted well, considering its a bunch of 10 year olds with the foot flat to the floor and doing donuts donuts while riding it. the engine on it needs to make way for either a identical rebuilt quantum or a barstidised ohv briggs when i attach the deck. i dont really want to put the new engine on it till i find out if i can put a decent flywheel on it or not. i dont want to spend too much though. thanks allot regards jay
