try it on something you dont need to use , you will see why then . clean the crankcases 1st and leave to dry then compare in daylight , you will see wirewheel marks on the part you DONT want to use . something like the briggs starter in your pic is a good thing , (one on the right) no matter how gentle it leaves unwanted marks on alloy

I understand what you are saying vccomm. a good degrease and maybe a steel scouring pad to shine it up??

not meant to shine though , just look like nice clean alloy just try it ? then see what you think . yu said it ran well so no need to pull it down right now just clean it up , try not to get cleaners or too much water in under the flywheel or you lose your spark again !!!
care is all you need to use .
