Each oil company has its own kit, with its own samples. I used to have my grandfather's old kit from his days in that business with Vacuum Oil. I would estimate that was in the 1920s. I threw it out as junk.

I've never kept stuff just in case it became valuable Ian. I never sell anything anyway, so it would just be more stuff to store. A very few things that were works of art in their way, rather than merely old and rare, have been stashed, simply on the principle that only a barbarian destroys works of art.

Poetry in motion Grumpy.
Beautifully said and straight to the point.
A work of art in itself.

Not understanding the comment Grumpy
I did not keep this in case it might be worth something one day.
I came across it at a garage sale and through the net was surprised the value some of these are
So you dont sell anything but if you dont want it you dump it ??????????
Arent we all very lucky that people do keep items if not there would not be anything around for us to collect no museums no vintage cars, trucks, mowers and the list is endless and we would not have anything to show todays generation of how things used to be done
If you never sell anything how did you collect what you have ??? WOW does that mean some silly person decide to save it to sell or pass on
Arent we lucky some people do want to sell and not dump

I'm not critical of people who sell stuff Ian, it just isn't for me. Neither is collecting. I essentially have stuff that I use, or think I may use. From time to time I take a more beady-eyed look at what I have and throw out a bunch more stuff.

As for where it came from, some I inherited and some I traded for in a run-down condition, and repaired for my own use. I once co-inherited rather a lot of stuff, along with my brother. Some of it qualified as works of art, and we spent our weekends for 18 months getting it into shape so it could go to auction. The rest we took to the tip, one 6x4 trailer load at the end of each day's work. Many tons of stuff went that way. I welded the A-bar back on that little trailer twice, adding further reinforcements each time, and replaced a collapsed-and-welded-to-itself wheel bearing once. Along the way I resolved not to leave a job like that to my heirs when I turn up my toes.
