Does anyone know how to get the Gear Pinion off the Shaft Drive Main of an Atom Edger As I have to replace it.

Hello MullosA warm welcome to the ODK forums. Atom have made quite a number of edgers. I went to the Atom global site and chose the 'support' area. There was quite a comprehensive manual found under item/model 203. A new pinion may be found at the ODK Store HERE. Thanks Jack, I thought it may have screwed on or it was pressed on but wasn't sure. I will wait till I receive the replacement part and see if it has a thread in it, if so I'm away. By the way it is a 450 model, I should have mentioned that in my original post. Thanks for your help.

The first Atom edgers had an unbranded Ryobi half-crank engine, while the later ones have a 4 stroke Honda. Be sure you're dealing with the right model before you order a part. Hello Grumpy, Yep, quite right. The Model 101 is a different design. Mullos' 450 is as described. The part in the ODK store is correct as linked. The pinion is item number 67 in the illustration:-

Thanks Jack. That might be quite an interesting machine. The concept of the Atom edger seems quite a bit handier than the heavy edgers such as the Victa and the Alroh, and with the Honda engine it might be trouble-free as well. One could hope so, at least.

Yes, I'd have to again agree there Grumpy. Nice and light and manoeuvrable. I think Atom is one of the un-sung heroes of Australian power equipment makers. I was surprised to learn they have been in business since 1962. I guess everyone knows them from the Atom electronic ignition system... All their products are claimed to be designed, developed, manufactured and sold in Australia, as well as many export markets. I had one of their very early locally-designed and -manufactured chainsaws many years ago Jack, and it was quite awful compared with good imported ones. The problem was not with the concept, which was in line with overseas designs, it was the details of the execution, which made it very unreliable. It could be argued that small organisations trying to make complex products inevitably lack both the engineering budget, and the experienced staff, to get that stuff right on a new product.

Agreed, that their chain saws were never up to much, as I recall. Their first real standout, innovative product AFAIK was the Atom Post Borer chainsaw attachment, which they still make. Small, light, compact and auto-reversing! Previous handheld fence-post borer drills were powered by small engines or tractor PTO's, via a clumsy flexible shaft setup. One of the Cobram fencing contractors had a Kohler engine mounted on an old wheelbarrow frame as a portable power source, for one of these units. The handheld unit had to incorporate forward and reverse clutches, so they were quite heavy to handle. But as Jack says, the Atom Ignition module was their real success story; it was truly world-leading, at the time it was introduced.
