Hi folks, my brother in laws trimmer has issues where is breaks down at high revs, starts and idles fine, especially so when cold, actually it runs perfectly. After a few minutes the problems start and it pops and dies, splutters etc. Starts straight up and idles fine again and repeats the revs issue.

I pulled down the carb and cleaned it, replaced plug, checked compression, spark, checked fuel lines and replaced a poor condition air cleaner all with no result.

I am reluctant to buy a coil that cost half what the machine cost new on the slim chance it isn't the problem.

Throw any ideas or anyone used this type of machine? Testing a coil with a multimeter?

Its around 2 to 3 years old.

The right way to find the fault is with an in-line spark tester, Aldo:

Once you've overhauled the ignition system as you have, the next step is to see whether it really has steady even spark when it is misbehaving. Once you know it is ignition failure, you need to isolate the kill wire to be sure that isn't where the breakdown is occurring, before you consider the ignition module itself.

You don't need to buy the in-line tester if you'd rather make one. Here is a type that's easy to make:

I haven't had this on the Husqvarna but did fight this type problem on Homelite chainsaw. I did nearly everything the OP did.

I would try disconnecting the kill wire as Grumpy suggested to at least eliminate a possible intermittent grounding of the kill circuit.

The problem on my end did turn out to be the electronics in the coil causing spark advance problems. It did at one time even set the air filter on fire. I mean this chainsaw would backfire and afterfire whenever you tried the accel from idle and other times run prefect.

The in-line tester is fine for finding a missing spark but it will not tell you that there is a timing issue. From the description of the problem that is probably what is going on.

I don't the cost in your area but here they only 40 usd with shipping.

Thanks fellas, yes after a brief test run yesterday it has burnt the new aircleaner I installed. Got me scratching my head for sure. I will suss out the kill switch then I might pass on it.

After telling him last night that it had me miffed he said it only ran well for the first 6 months and has always been temperamental.

That model along with the 128c has a habit of bad coils from new, have replaced many.
