Picked up another old kick/pedal start engine today.

No sign of any identifying marks/brands/numbers anywhere - but maybe something will turn up when I give it a clean.

"Can anyone suggest what this might be"?

Awww can i guess...garn let me! Uhm, its an Engine! lols

Naaa Polybus ive got no idea....But id love to know more. Solid head reminds me of old compressors and sidevalve V8s. Its really cool, hope someone knows as nothing on it resembles any engine im familiar with. 30s or 40s might be the age due to its appearance, but industrial often carried old styling well into more modern times. Hmmm im liking all this stuff your digging out:) keep us posted on this, im really keen to see what you can do with it:)

Hi Polybus,
I'm with Blue on this one, I have never seen anything like it, but I really like the engineering that has gone into it....Just the kick-start mechanism is to be admired and I would love to know what it came from...I agree with Blue, it does look like an industrial application...but what, is anyone's guess!

congrats on a good score there!

That looks like it alright!!

So now the search begins for a Cowl - cowls seems to get lost- now Im after a Cowl for a JAP Model 6 and now this Briggs and Stratton Model A

Thanks so much for the info smile

The only info I have on it - the guy who gave it to me says he thinks his dad had it stored away his shed since the 50s or 60s.

I'm not sure how quickly I will get to this one....over the last few weeks I have gone on a bit of an Australian made Villiers kick - I've picked up:

1 x Model 12
1 x Model 12HS
1 x Model 12HS with Kick/Pedal Start
2 x Model 10

plus the J.A.P. Model 6 I mentioned elsewhere and a Lister B Junior

I'll post photos of everything soon.

The Briggs Model A was made from 1933 to 1948, in many versions. From the serial number you can find when it was made, here:
http://www.asecc.com/data/briggs/data1.html#A

As you can see, they made about a quarter of a million of them.

Thanks for providing pictures of that engine, Polybus. While the Model A is not an unusual find (in the US at least - it may be in Australia), the optional kickstart seems to be fairly rare.

AFter giving it a very cursory clean, I did find this one little plate attached to the crank case.

Its a little screw on plate, about 2cm long, and appears to be held on with two little screws - it bears the number "13-0" and nothing else. Check the photo.

Not sure if this gives us any more information.
