G'day all. Jeez, its nice to back on the forum! Just trying to ascertain the age of this 17" SB45 that I picked up for a steal. It's mower number 03702 which I'm assuming is an early model. A couple of different features to my other 45 are the following; - Engine plate is solid and bolted at the sides
- cluch lever base is screwed down and not welded
- side cover has horizontal screws and not vertical
- forward control cable mount is different.
It has a silver 2hp briggs which I'm thinking is not original but should be a kirby instead.
I know that the catcher is from a new model and lucky me, nearly dent free
Any info or photos would be greatly appreciated. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/02/full-1727-14993-photo_1.jpg)

Hi TrajkulaSB45, and a warm welcome back to the OutdoorKing forum. For us to be able to help you with dating your Scotty, we will need you to post some extra pics of your machine. Without these we would be just flying blind. Please include one pic of the front of the machine (cylinder reel and bedknife) and one of the machine with the chain-case cover removed. Please also the complete string of numbers (Model, Type and Code) stamped into the air cowling of the Briggs engine. This one will be hard to date, because as you may know, the Mower Number is useless for dating a Scotty, as they didn't run sequentially. I suspect, as you do, that there has been an engine change...but it is an early machine, late 60's, early 70's.

Deejay will know the answer for sure, but I don't recall there ever being a 2 hp engine on a 17" SB45. Those 6 cubic inch engines only went on the 14" machines IIRC. The 17" models had engines of 2.5 hp and more.
Your engine is old, being silver - probably 1960s, and probably a 60102 or 60202. I suggest you preserve it in case you ever acquire an SB45 it belongs on. The engine is as much a classic as the SB45 itself.

Hi again TrajkulaSB45,Grumpy is quite correct, the silver 2HP. Briggs and Strattons were fitted to the early 14" Scotties, whilst the 17" machines were fitted with the Kirby Tecumseh (Lauson) HK 30, 3HP. 4-Stroke engines. Some of the very early (1968) 17" machines may have been fitted with the Kirby Tecumseh HK 25, 2.5HP 4-Strokes. Once we see what the Model, type and Code is on your silver Briggs is we can give you the date of its manufacture and we will know the model.

Hi again,
Thanks for your replies.
I'll get some more photos put up later tonight, I'm in Perth so you will probably be either tinkering in the shed late at night or tucked up in bed when I do so.
I'll be restoring the Briggs and keeping as a show piece. I rarely see them in silver. The PO drilled through the Scottie clutch and crank resulting on the crank spindle breaking off leaving jus 1/2" left so a new crank is already on the shopping list. I'll create a rebuild thread for the briggs, it will be my first engine rebuild. Following that I'll do another thread for the original Tecumseh on my other mower.
Regards
Tony.

Thanks Tony for your reply, its a real shame that the previous owner did such a shoddy repair....I hope you can source a serviceable crankshaft for it. Please don't forget to post the Model, Type and Code for it, that way, one of our members may be able to help you with a replacement.

Heres some more photos, looking forward to finding out tge age of the B&S. Sorry about the orientation. I tried 5 times to modify the photos with no luck. Why you should not drill through the crank. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/02/full-1727-15031-photo_1.jpg) Solid brass height adjuster. Would polish up nicely. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/02/full-1727-15032-photo_2.jpg) Horizontal cover screws ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/02/full-1147-15039-scotty_chain_case_1_.jpg) Chains and sprockets are like new. PO may have had them replaced ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/02/full-1147-15040-scotty_chaincase_2.jpg) Engine serial number of the B&S. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2014/02/full-1727-15037-photo_5.jpg) Thanks again for your help. Hi again Tony,So your silver Briggs is a model 60102, and was manufactured on the 19th January 1968, which makes it an early engine. The sprockets and chains look in great condition...I also notice the the front roller end-caps have been replaced with the later plastic ones, the original ones were alloy and you can see the holes in the roller where the rivets were drilled out that were used to attach the alloy caps.

Thanks Deejay,
Do you think that with Ians mower to support it that maybe the B&S is original on this mower or was it definitely powered by a Kirby. Roughly what year is the mower?
Would you possibly know the part number for the crank I need on the B&S?
My plans are to use the good parts on this mower to rebuild my other scottie then build something to sell with the remaining parts.
Have a great weekend!

Hi again Tony,Your machine is an early solid deck...impossible to date it, but between 1968 and 1973 I would guess. The silver Briggs is definitely not original on this machine...all 17" machines were powered by Kirby Tecumseh's. Grumpy may be able to identify the crank shaft part number for you.

The part number of the standard crankshaft is 260271. There are something like a dozen others used on 60102 engines, and all of them may be usable on yours. Here is the Illustrated Parts List for your engine: http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/18lowGXBnfBhU7y.pdfHowever a new crankshaft will cost at least $120 plus shipping from the US. A deal like this might be more attractive: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-BRI...-ROD-PISTON-kart-minibike-/161215829542?The 6 cubic inch horizontal-crankshaft Briggs engines are very popular for minibikes etc in the US. That means there is demand for the parts, which is not a bad thing because it means people will list them for sale.
