Hey grumpy you are correct. There is a second hole at the grey choke connection but I'm not sure why. Is this a bit of a mix match system as is the spring and rod set up to the vane not for this engine? I also noticed that in figure 58, that there is a speed adjustment screw which i dont have. Thoughts?

Thanks for the reply mate. I did pull it apart when i disasselbled it and i may have lubed it up but i will do as you say. Do you know if there should be that amount of fwd/back play?

Edit: i did a ebay search for priceing and it was stated from 1 supplier that a high end screech was a simpton of wear. Can anyone else confirm this?

if badly worn yes , but most respond well to a little TLC inside where the balls are should be clean , free from debris . shaft LIGHTLY lubed and if its allgood not worn badly it will work with no screeching , some even push put the starter cord and still when claened n lubed work fine

Briggs specifies just one drop of high-quality light oil on the bearing part of the starter spindle. No lube whatever on the balls and in the sprag clutch area: clean those parts like for an operating theatre.

AFAIK there is no model of that carburetor with two holes in the choke pull-out knob. It seems the previous tenant has made an "improvement". You need to put it in the hole shown in the illustration I posted. You might be able to see drill marks in the wrong hole, proving it is home-made.

You do have the idle speed screw, circled in green in this copy of your photo:


It doesn't seem to be the correct original idle speed screw, but at least it is there and working. A washer under the screw head would be an improvement on what you have - the correct screw has a bigger head.

Your engine has had some minor alterations made by an enthusiastic amateur, and you will have to find those adulterations and fix them. This often happens, and is a bit irritating, but hopefully you got the mower cheap. Adulterated mowers are worth considerably less than original ones.

Hi gents, i wanted to also know how much free play should be in the space for the pull roller in the engine case? How would you know if the it is worn?

Look at the ramps on the male sprags. There will be indentations in them where the balls have rolled up them too often and pressed against them too hard, if there is wear. I suggest you post close-up pictures of the ramps so we can see how much wear there is. We should also be able to see if the sprags have been reground already. If it has been reground then has worn a new set of grooves, it will be time for replacement.
