Hi ODK members,

I am a big fan of British JP mowers.
"J.P." was a company formed by engineers named Jerram and Pearson, and the
factory was located at Meynell Road, Leicester.

The company is no more but they made a number of innovative machines - push, petrol and electric -
over about five decades. They were considered the "Rolls Royce of Mowers".

Here I want to discuss a very unusual hand push mower - the Matchless, made from about
1947 to 1949 in 10" and 12" variants. It was the only side-wheel machine that JP made.
They sold in most States across Australia in un-ascertained quantities.

When I first saw one on e-Bay I thought the seller had put the handle on the wrong way - No!
It's a side-wheel mower built back to front. The small roller is at the front!

This probably gave better traction to the drive wheels, but I think its design overcame
a defect associated with side-wheel machines where height was regulated by adjusting a
small rear roller. [that will be linked at a later time]

I have seen two Matchless machines come up on eBay Australia. One sold, one did not.
I failed to bid and that is a regret. Next time one comes up . . .

All very matchless.
