Hi guys, I was on here a few months ago after having problems with my old rover colt 5 cutter deck shaft. Many thanks for the help recieved. I now have a tractor 8 and the carb had been removed to have a new throttle shaft installed. That was done but my question is, which hole does the governor rod fit into
there is a plain hole at the end-then a tiny hole in the middle -then a larger hole with what looks like a black plastic bush-this is close to the actual shaft.
maybe I should have put this in the engine section.
regards rayman

Hi rayman, please post the Model, Type and Code for your engine, which I expect will be a Briggs and Stratton. This long string of numbers is stamped on the cooling air cowl, near the carburetor.
Pictures of the carburetor and the throttle linkage will also help.

With that information we should be able to find the engine in the Briggs workshop manual.

There seems to be a digit missing from the Code, rayman. If you correct that I can tell you the engine's date of manufacture. Meanwhile here is the Illustrated Parts List:

Here is the Operator's Manual:

The carburetor is a Large One-Piece Flo-Jet. Here is how it works (from the workshop manual):

The manual shows your engine as having this type of governor control:

Here is the manual's drawing of how your linkage connects:

Here is the instruction from the Operator's Manual showing how to set up that control:

At this point I think we need clarification that the control in the picture is the same as yours, plus we need a picture of yours, and clarification of your exact question. As you can see, there are three things to connect to the throttle butterfly lever. At the long end of the lever, the main link (from the top of the governor control) is connected. In the middle, the anti-oscillation spring goes through the tiny hole. (Note that the anti-oscillation spring is slid over the outside of the main link). At the short end of the lever, the remaining link (from the middle of the governor control) connects.

Hi Grumpy, [Linked Image]
this is the culprit, the choke rode is non existant, I have fitted a loose piece of wire for the time being.
the speed control is n/a its either all or f-all.
regards ray

I don't understand your reference to a choke connection to the throttle butterfly. Can you explain that please, preferably with a picture? It also looks as if you have the anti-oscillation spring connected to Hole 1, where it is supposed to go to Hole 2. The main link through the middle of the spring should go to Hole 1 and the other end of it should connect at the back of the rack-and-pinion governor control.

Can you post a picture of the back of the governor control please, so we can see the link connections?

The speed control cable should operate the rack on the back of the governor control, and the rack should travel through its full movement when you move the speed control from stop to maximum.

It might be a bit late, But it will go into the little hole nearest the shaft with the plastic bush the other little one is for the little spring on the link. All the new shafts have the extra hole up top which is for the late models. all the early ones use the lowest hole.
