First off I did use the search tool, but sisn;t fingd the answer.
I seized the motor on my GF's Victa Vantage (reckon ex hubby didn't put any oil in the petrol)
Anyway the motor freed up after it cooled and I've pulled the exhaust off and the rings seem to be pretty tight in their grooves.
So I pulled the starter and head off and the barrel looks ok'ish.
Next step is to get the piston out to check it and the rings.
I see the special tool to remove the crank pin and also the DIY tool, which I'll make, but the big question is how to stop the crank from turning when I'm trying to get the pin out without buggering something else up.
Any tips would be welcomed.
Cheers

G'day Is the engine still on the frame? If so have a look at the boss just above the cutter disc - there should be hole in it. You might be able to stick a rod in there and jam it up against the frame somewhere. Or if the engine is off, maybe stick the head back on and poke in some nylon rope to jam up the piston when you turn the crank to the top.
hope this helps. matt

Take the disc off, engine off the base and clamp the boss on the crank in a vice. Or if you dont want to take the engine off the base, refit the head with something in the bore, small block of wood perhaps, soemthing not sharp that will spread the load so as not to damage the piston or head. The old trick is to feed a bit of clean rope into a spark plug hole. Then rotate the motor to lock it. I actually used this trick a few months back to get the harmonic ballacner undone on my father in laws little suzuk swift. worked a treat, should have just done that to start with instead of chasing around after a compresor and rattle gun that wouldnt even touch it.
Shouldnt take much more than 10mins to pull the motor right off, and if youve got a vice this is the go.
Then for when you need to turn the crank but still want to hold the engine in the vice, get an 8mm bolt and cut the head off hacksaw a slot in the shaft so you can screwdriver it in and out and use the stud in a mounting bolt hole and clamp that in the vice. Dont take the stud out, use it as a guide pin to put the engine back on the frame, only take it out when you have a couple of the other mounting bolts back in.
You can actually reassemble the whole motor, ignition starter etc and test it for spark in the vice, then put it back on the mower, add carb, test the stop wires and its good to go. I do it this way for mowers with ignition module issues.
Cheers, Bob.

Hi Bob,
Which part exactly is the boss on the crank? I am in the process of dismantling a powertorque engine. I have got the crank pin off, piston and conrod out. Now I need to get the crank, bearings and flywheel off.. what is the best technique to do this? I have a vice, hammer and some punches to use for the bearings.
any help would be great!

The metal blade disc boss on the crank under the flywheel.
It is locked on to the flywheel via a taper.
Sit one side of the boss on an anvil and hit the other with a hammer and that should release the lock. Then with the boss off you can wiggle the flywheel off. It is on a straight shaft, slides off but will be corroded etc, wiggle and lever and take care.
Then upturn the block on some bits of wood and drift the crank out. Do whatever you like to protect the thread. I use and old blade disc nut.
To pull it all back together you will need a big washer to replace the blade plate with and you can just use the big nut that holds the disk on. Might be a bit hard without a rattle gun.
Are the crank bearings stuffed?? Is the lower crank seal stuffed??? If the crank spins free and the seal is not leaking oil everywhere you are wasting your time pulling it apart. Just put the piston & rings in.
