Deejay,

These are the numbers i found on the engine cowl.
60102 0302 01 7004013

Its a 2hp briggs on a 14" 45

I have fitted the cylinder and new bed knife and I'm pretty excited with the way it cuts!
Just like using a new razor!

Seemed to start running a lot better after a while too....
Maybe because it had been sitting for so long it just needed a good run?

I think it will still benefit from the correct spring though.....

Shifty, it isn't unusual for an engine that has been sitting a long time to have poor valve sealing, which sometimes cures itself: the valves may bed themselves in with a period of light running. Conversely, heavy loads on an engine in that condition are likely to burn the valves through leakage, making the poor sealing permanent. The valves then have to be lapped.

Id reccomend pulling the cover off the valve chest and checking the clearances.

Its not hard to reset them if needed. A screwdriver and a bench grinder is all you need. If you want me to write something up to run you through it i can.

You can buy a cheap set of valve spinners, (wooden handle with a suction cup on the end) big one and a small one. And a tube of valve grinding paste. Its not hard to do.

Its never a bad idea, i pull the head off all the older mowers, You cant check to see how good the rings are but you can get a look at the bore and it does not matter how much messing and tuning you do if the bore is no good you wont fix the motor to a point where its worth having.

From a post further up

"Checked valve clearance. Intake and exhaust are bout the same. .011 thou..."

That is geverally my rule of thumb clearance that I have never had dramas with.

While it's running ok, i think ill leave it be. If it starts giving me grief, ill be more than happy to give her a birthday!

Cheers...
