New to the forum... but am about to do something unmentionable if I can't make some sense of this soon!
I have a 160cc Victa Slasher, I've 3 virtually complete 160 engines to choose from, all points models. I've dis-assembled and reassembled the best components together but have now lost my spark (literally and metaphorically). I can only think it's something I've done wrong as there were at least two working ignitions prior to this rebuild.
I can swap between the three complete ignition's with no joy. I can try all combinations of flywheels / ignitions with no joy. I can run the cut-out wire to the throttle or not, still no joy. It's years since I've had to play around with points and so don't have any sort of diagnostic multi-meter type thing (and am too stupid to know what to do with it anyway nowadays).
Is there any step by step process I can go through to establish that the 3 components on my ignition base-plate (coil - condenser - points) are OK and somehow start to make some sense of this.
Appreciate your heeeeeelp!
Cheers

Curmudgeon, I suggest that you clean the area with emery or sand paper where the plate mounts onto the housing (where the screws go). Once you have done this check for spark again.

Thanks Bruce,
I tried that but to no avail....
Is it worth noting that I am full assembled apart from the cowl and starter pull handle and am testing holding the HT close to the head whilst spinning it up with a socket on the end of a cordless drill on the top nut of the flywheel? I read something somewhere about the "role the cowl played" but can't think how this could affect the spark?
Getting very confused now.

Pics might help as theres a few different 160cc engine variants. Im guessing series 70 mkIII, but its a guess.
You could swap the points out for an electronic ignition module. Will set you back about $25-30. Same price as new points and condensor.

Yep,
I'll give in to the inevitable.
I've just ordered one..... I'm guessing they're pretty straight forward to fit?
I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere on the site.
Cheers

Hi Curmudgeon, and a warm welcome to the forum. As Rodeobob has said posting a pic of the engine will help with identifying your model...I am sure one of the Victa gurus will jump in then and step you through the process to fit the module.... Once again,

Ones defo a 70 MKII and ones defo a 70 MKIII, not sure about the 3rd... it's just a donor though and isn't fundamentally different to either of the others.
I've just received my electronic module, it seems fairly straightforward, cut the wire from the points to the coil and bin the points and condenser, screw the little unit on around there somewhere and join the wires?
So what is the trigger for this and how to I time it correctly?
Also I've got 3 coils to choose from, anyway of establishing which of these are good or not?
Cheers Gurus!

OK, Series 70 MKII and III are practically the same engine, the only real differences come down to some extrodinarily minor amendments to the carburettor, an updated coil, and a slight re-tune.
They are fully interchangable component and application wise
The 3rd engine, does it too have a metal carby? and does it have a decompression valve?
Cheers Ty

You dont need to time it. Coil times it.
As far as the coil goes, it either works or it doesnt. Ive tried to find impedance readings for the coils but no luck.

They all had decompression valves and 2 had metal carb's one had a plastic one that was damaged.
I've blocked the decompression valve up figuring that it's got to run healthier without (rightly or wrongly).
I'll fit the new ignition unit on the w'end.

Actually, decompression valves are not hard to clean up (especially if you have two) and will help start the engine much easier (especially when you are trying to work with ignitions, they lead to a stronger spark, and help prevent flooding)
I would strongly recommend restoring the decompression valve.
The 3rd engine sounds like a Series 70 MKIV, with a G4 carby.
Cheers Ty
