Morro, bentonite refers to the matrix of the grease, which holds the oil that is the lubricating part of the grease. Matrices are either clay or soap, and bentonite is a type of clay. You can find a discussion of the problem, and a proposed solution, here:

You could get reasonable results with a common soap-based grease such as automotive chassis greases but they do not follow the transmission manufacturer's intent, so it is less adventurous to use a bentonite grease such as HTB. Also, because clay and soap greases are mutually incompatible, switching to a soap-based grease would require that you strip the transmission and clean it properly before refilling with the new grease.
