Hi Guys,
Haven't been here for awhile because I gave away and/or sold all my mowers that I had been tinkering with. Now my own mower is playing up. The cable kept dislodging and causing the mower to rev out to max. I've fixed that (again) but there is something wrong and I just can't figure it. There is fuel at the fuel line going into the carb but there doesn't seem any resistance in the primer bulb when I press it. Despite a hobby of fixing mowers I am as mechanical as a ballet dancer. Any ideas?

On victa primers there should be no resistance really on the primer bulb as they are full of air, pressing it simply pressureises the float bowl forcing fuel through the jet.

Fitting the cable to the carby can be a pain at times sometimes I have had to insert the cable with the carby apart. There is some cable adjustment up top, adjust it all the way down this may help stop the cable popping out.

Ta Joe, I thought I was squeezing fuel when I pressed the bulb....all these years. I will definitely adjust the cable as it has a habit of popping out. The problem of it not starting must be somewhere else. Lucky I still have a second mower because the grass is getting high with all the rain we've had in Mackay. Now I am racing against yet another storm.

evry victa with the old black plastic carby ive picked up or saved from the scrap yard "i should say" all had running isues or would not start at all hence they were thrown out. a new primer cap with new float needle and oring,soaked jet screw in carb cleaner pluss a bit of a quick clean inside carb body nothing fancy..(dont use carb cleaner on rubber orings it will eat them i use wd40) it solved everything on all three of them and they all run great start first pull smile instead of useing primer cap i just give it few light pulls with throtle in off position that normaly primes it for me.. pluss the primer bulb will last longer cause your not useing it smile look at your primer cap around the edges of the bulb if you see lots of little cracks its most likely leaking air and will need replaceing...ive just put a metel slide carb on my victa cause im sick off replaceing primer caps

When you pull the plug out and find its dry, then put it back in the mower should pop a few times like its half thinking about going.


No fuel could be a sticky float. Tap the carb with the handle of a screwdriver. Or violently shake the mower. Ive had a bit of trobule with this, with new primer faces and new needles.


If its a fuel flow issue, leave the mower sit for a while with the fuel tap on. Try it again.

By rev out to the max do you mean rev way too high??? Thats a sign of lean running. I would say its not actually getting full throttle. I would be checking for air leaks. Sounds like when the cable comes out it is letting the carb go to full throttle. Might be an adjustment issue. Have you checked that full noise is fully open???

One thing i have found on a few mowers (mainly the older short filter type) is that the black plastic cable holder bit up in the air filter housing is some times not bonded to the cables outer. You can screw it up and down the spiral outer sheath and this alters the relationship between the inner and outer.

Pull the cable out of the air hose.

Clip it in the carb to check your adjustments in between twisting the air cleaner around, cant remember which way does what.
