Hi guys my mother has given up on her Victa powertorque mower and i thought i would try and get it going.

First i noticed that there was no gasket between the head and the motor so i replaced that.

I then noticed a slow leak from the carby i pulled the carby apart gave it a clean put a new needle in it and replaced the primer button/cap.

All good until i went to start it. I primed it ( but it didnt feel like it was doing much) gave it a pull and it runs for about 5 seconds then stops. Any ideas.

Plugger,

When you put the new primer cap on did you make sure that the line on the face of the carby was horizontal to the body? cheers2

Firstly check that your fuel tank cap has a clear(not blocked)vent-then if you have subscribed to the manual section, have a look at the victa carby section.i would sugest dismantling the carby for a good clean then re try.the tank fuel tap has a built in filter which can be also cleaned...ken

Hi Ken

The carby was pulled apart and cleaned when i put the new needle and primer cap on. The fuel is flowing unrestricted through the fuel line to the carby but when it has started if i keep pushing the primer button before it stops it will keep going.

It seems as if the fuel isnt being drawn through the carby.

I have checked all vacum lines and they all seem to be in good order.

It seems that t

The only thing that i can think of is the hole in the poppet valve is not lined up with the spray hole.the poppet valve is the white?long plastic thing that looks like a engine valve and the stalk end clips on to the rubber diaphram under the external black plastic cap.Dj is your man...ken

As mowerman said it sounds like the fuel cap vent is blocked.

Check your bottom Crank Case seal, sounds like you're loosing crank case pressure??

OK so here's the update,

I was able to get it to idle with the throttle just above start and the valve turned to 'C' very rough though.

I then turned the valve to 'A'and it idles alot better. The problem now is that i can't move the throttle any further or it stalls..

If operating the primer improves the situation, the problem is lean mixture. If you have verified that there is adequate fuel flow from the tank to the carburetor, and you are confident that the carburetor is now in good order, the remaining possibility is that there is an induction air leak downstream of the carburetor. Because it is a Powertorque, history suggests you should start by examining the three O rings: two in the inlet pipe, and one under the starter. Intake air leaks on Powertorques traditionally involve one of those three possibilities.

you may also find the jet or the little hole it screws into may be partially blocked too. you can either try to clear this by removing the jet and cleaning it manually or pull off the air snorkel at the top, block it with your hand and pull the rope it may suck through any blockage if there is one.

The second trick works really well on old G3 carby victas I have found in the past.

Ok so i think i have found the problem....

Topped up the fuel tank last night and this morning there was nothing left except a puddle.

Now all i have to do is find where its leaking from out of the carby

okay this is probably a stupid question, but have you checked the fuel lines again? There maybe a hairline split before it gets to the carby/primer, or even at the clamps (check both ends). I find sometimes on my backpack brushcutter (the engine is mounted on my back and flexable shaft comes around to front) the fuel-line splits where it flares onto the intake on the carby. It isn't obvious as it's only a problem when the engine swivels with movement and opens the split enough to let it suck in air and stalls.

Worth a check at any rate, could be there, just not obvious
