3 litre steel fuel tank has petrol leak from spot weld holding the mounting bracket plate. Can see the spot weld inside the tank and have cleaned it up with wire brush. Wanting something to seal just the area around the weld internally, the tank is otherwise in great condition.

30 years ago I worked for a metal fabricating company and one of my jobs was cleaning out marine diesel tanks in steel hulled ships and applying a 2 part lining material. This stuff worked brilliantly but came in large drums. I borrowed a small amount and used it sucessfully to line old motorcycle tanks but the Part B has long since evapourated and Part A turned hard.

I only need a couple of mls now.

Any recommendations of some reliable modern equivalent that is readily available in small quantities?

Hi MM,

Possibly if there is enough room you could drill the spot weld from the outside and bolt it together putting a fibre washer
on both sides.(use the headed end of the bolt in the tank that has the metal washer and head as one part.

If you can't braze or silver solder the tank yourself , I don't think it's worth fixing , even a tank repair putty is at least $10.
you may as well spend a little more on a new tank ,or just fit any tank you can find.

They can be found cheap online.

Cheers
Max.

Maybe a pop rivet with fiber washers each side could be the go. plasti bond putty by memory is solvent resistant also, that may work for you. Just be very careful if using and type of flame, I guess I'm stating the obvious there.

A friend had some fuelproof 2 pack tank sealant and I put some over the leaking spot weld internally, let it cure a couple of days and the tank still leaked so realised it must be coming from some of the other dozen spotwelds.

Put a coat covering all the welds and now all is good.

Although the pump is only 3 years old a spare tank was not available which seems poor form - Bianco BIA-WP15A - but now that I found several of the welds had leaked it was probably a good thing they don't supply spares as a new one may have developed leaks down the track.
