On these old L-Heads, has anyone come across flogged out threads in the block that the breather tube screws into? For some reason, on this engine I couldn't get the breather tube to screw down, on inspection I noticed the threads were gone on the breather tube, so I ordered a new one.

As I had expected, the threads in the block were gone as well, so the new part didn't tighten down. Now, this is a 23-year-old engine and I know financially it doesn't make sense dropping money into a basic Briggs. As I have mentioned before, this mower and engine hold sentimental value, to the point where I re-ringed the engine last year.

To repair this, I'm considering a helicoil, which with the valve cover removed, it wouldn't be depositing metal fragments into the block.

Would love some feedback on this.

Just put it in with JB Weld or even silicone it is only to prevent dust from getting in around the threads

Make a thread on the tube for added friction.
Clean both the breather hole and tube oil free.
Apply JB-Weld when inserting the tube.
Position the tube toward the rubber elbow.
Let it dry for 48hrs.
