The issue is well known to Briggs, the cam valve lifter fails and then you can't turn them over because you are hitting full compression too early. They have been known to fail after only 20 hours use and the Briggs fix it to replace it with a new cam that could fail again in another 20 hours. Good for the dealers but Briggs don't care about the customer, they can pay the bill

As an owner of one of these engines, thank you for flagging this.
Is there anything one can do to minimise the chances of this fault occurring? Or do you think it's better to do something like the Victa decomp valve if/when it happens? As I have to say I've found it an excellent engine in my limited usage of it. Good power, easy to start, pretty frugal on the fuel etc.
