Hi everyone,

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here.

I’m looking for some help identifying the correct jockey arm spring dimensions for a Rover Colt 5 mower. I haven’t been able to find a replacement here in Australia, and I’ve tried using similar springs with different lengths, outer diameters, and thicknesses, but they either cause stalling or backfiring.

For context, the tip of the original spring broke, and I bent it back into shape. However, it now seems like there’s too much load on the motor, which is causing backfiring.

The current spring is 165mm in length (I believe it was originally around 170mm), with a 2mm thickness and a 15mm outer diameter. I’m not sure if a different spring would work, or if I should have one custom-made at a spring shop (which I’m worried might cost around $60 and still not work properly).

Could this issue also be related to the drive belt?

Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated!

It is only a tensioner so it should not cause the motor to stall or backfire. All the spring tension has to do is ensure the belt doesn't slip. Does the spindle rotate freely?
