What is the difference between a Quattro 40 and a 500 series motor.

To start, pretty sure the 40 has an airvane governor, 500 series is mech governor.

Otherwise, I have been told they vary valve timing to get the extra power

but 40 is 4 hp remember

500 is 5ftlb torque

As the 3.5hp briggs became the 450, I would dare say not much diff between 40 and 500

There isn't much if any difference between them. Not all the 500 series had mechanical governors, there was quite a few with the air vane governor. Conversely they also made some 450 series with mechanical governors, the one's found on a 16inch "909" or "Automatic"( I can't remember which one now) which was also fitted with an engine brake on them.

Hi Ted

I remember the little 909 green mowers as well. From memory, the one I saw didn't have a throttle adjustment - just a spring about the same as a mech governor one but on a little peg. Start it and it ran at 3000rpm - on or off.

I immediately thought it had an airvane, but never looked further.

Only time I have ever seen a similar set up is american mowers or rovers for a few years

This something that hard for me to say anything about as I have never gone marketing names but usually just by model and type numbers. Once I have them then I can look up the specs. Just too model style to keep p with especially when you run independent shop that repairs many different OEM engines.

AVB, I have no luck getting people to tell me model type codes unless they bring it in, so have a reasonable off the top of the head converter.

Model type code makes it so much easier, but then briggs do stupid crap like half stamping numbers so I get told gibberish (especially later quantum)

series 500 is a 10t602 for sure, a common one over here I just looked up is a type 0146 H1

Quattro not sure but 10A902 rings bells, not sure of type, but my search history has 0164 which would have been a viking stihl mower I looked up

450 briggs is 09t502 , try 012 something. If I had a dollar for every oil change I have done on one of these 450s I would have a fair bit of coin. Very average motor, but good appliance and can take a hammering

Yep, that's the one Tyler, single speed with the spring on a fixed peg.
