I must admit I can't get my head around why Briggs & Stratton engines continue to blow coils one after the other, but mainly it seems to be the later Electronic types.

I have a another Quantum 50 engine here that was miss firing and then suddenly gave a bang with a backfire and then no spark.

I very much feel these coils were built down to a very cheap price and as such just don't have the longevity in them.

Love to hear opinions from others and whether my feelings are correct.

Hi BB,
I can't say I have had a particular problem with them, failure rate is about the same as I have found with any other coil, just the odd one here and there

Hi Norm,

Well I've had 3 in a row now as you probably well know, but I guess that's why these mowers all eventually hit the disposal list and get put out to either hard rubbish or scrap metal. Replacing a coil via a mower shop will generally be over $100 and with a few other things that need doing to each machine it becomes all too much in the end costing, so a new mower is purchased from Bunnings or one of the backyard retailers that do most of this work far cheaper.

I had a woman bring a Briggs mower here that she had taken to a mower shop, they had pulled the cowl off and told her it was going to cost her $130 to repair it. I just pulled the coil off and put another coil on it because it had no spark. Later I checked the coil and it was fine, it was the plug cap that was faulty
There was a Briggs coil type that I was able to grind down to make them fit, legs were about 2mm too long, I assume it was for the Quantams as they have different diameter fan wheels, just not sure what was what

I don't get many of the smaller engines to work on as consumers here opting for handheld trimmers and ZTR, current fad.

IF it is the later type it more likely poor solder joints on the SMD circuit board contained with the coil. Or at least that what was wrong with the one I took apart. I also was curious what what in there too. Most SMD components except one D13003 transistor. No diode protecting the coil if a positive voltage is connected to the kill tab which would destroy the electronics.

Usually the coil problems I have on walk behind mowers are where the dog or mice have chewed the hi tension lead (plug wire) so I just replace the lead.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Then only those that have either a bad head gasket or the operator didn't oil checked. I brought one as parts machine from Walmart that operator never put oil in it to start with. I know the 31 and 33 CI engine are bad to blown engines there for awhile before they increase the head bolt torque specs.

Lately I haven't seen any.
