So what I mean by stepped chassis is, when they went to the taller G65 engine they changed the front a little bit to drop the engine down into the frame to clear the bonnet, you can see the front of my machine is a bit different withe the flat sides. And I reckon this happened at the same time as the bonnet change.
Yes the steel deck exists, I have now seen 2 being sold with it, it was unusual was like a pressed steel deck.
Prd that's why I went the 1.x system, we can juggle them around to no end as more pop up, should possibly start a new thread for it and get some pictures happening as well. Its a shame no one from the company itself is still around from back then. I am sure more would have been documented but I think Lewis mentioned a fire in the early days, and with the cox buyout who knows what would have survived, I dearly hope someone saved that #2!
Fxxxrr My thought would be more likely that the front end cracked or it was run into something causing it to be welded back together, the rest of the frame is different to later models as well. Unless, there is the chance this was like a guinea pig and in the factory they were trying different things to see what worked. Yes the deck would have been alloy, even model 1 had an alloy deck, that is one thing that stayed with them right up until the end, not sure what the new ones have.
Hope everything is going well for you, I know that the big C can be a tough one.
Hi nath, I noticed recently when I was scratching around that there is a company I think in QLD supplying steel fabricated decks for the later models and will fabricate earlier ones on request
Oh an d Greenfielder, I only just had a look at you're thread on you're old one and noticed the same bonnet! It is a lot different to most of the early ones i've ever seen though. shows how they would prototype stuff and just sell it with the rest I guess!
Hey Nath ok i see the chassis difference now, Transitions from a square RHS section to a flat plate section almost back at he firewall, where as mine is RHS all the way through.
It looks like my Mk2 has the flat plate sides as well, and it also has a throttle leaver, like the old fergi tractors had , A lever on the dash next to steering column
Ok so i braved the elements and the pain to go exploring in the depths of my back shed/leanto here is the result, funny how the memory plays tricks i thought the throttle was on the top of the cowl next to steering wheel column goes to show hey. I had forgotten about Dads little tool box added to it still a spanner and couple of spare blades in there. so heres some pics, tell me if im boring you or if you want more
YOu can see why the bonnet wasnt on mainly due to the mods for the new clutch lever
From the photos it’s identical to mine and gml’s except yours has the flat plate style axle pivot where ours is RHS. * These are what we’ve been referring to as mk2.
Keys to its age are the two piece transmission cover and the piano hinge style. I think you’ve also got the gear motif decal on the front.
Dad definitely got to her . Greenfield’s lend themselves so well to bush modification and most machines have some. My own mk2 has a couple and I’m trying to leave them there as they are part of the machines history.
It probably originally had a G40 engine. Not sure what’s on it now.
It’ll take some repairing/restoring but it’s well do-able. My own machine started out in poor shape also.
You’ve got two great machines there.
Cheers,
* I’ve been using the term SHS in this thread when referring to this. That’s incorrect. It’s RHS of course. Please forgive.
Yup good old Dad LOL I'm sorta keen to keep most of dads mods, probably including the engine, Its now got a G200 in it i think i will just do the Mods needed to keep that motor and fit the bonnet over it might even keep the steering wheel, but need to do something cos if you turn to hard it over cooks the steering and it actually reverses it gunna need tyres all round, front 2 are stuffed and back 2 dont match, and thats one thing that triggers me is non matching tyres LOL
As for the steering going too far fxxxrr, that problem continued as far as the Anniversary models, not sure if it was a problem with the Evos although I do have something in the back of my mind from some years ago that I had to fit a stop on one and from memory they have a chain driven steering up the front somehow
Wow, he really didn't want that clutch to slip! I have a spare lever, it is the same as mine and i think ivye seen it on these early ones.
The steering is a fairly easy fix, front axle should have some stoppers that come down and catch the tie rod end before it goes too far. A lot of people cut these off to get some more steering but as in your case it can go backwards and lock everything up.
Cheers Norm and Nath, there is something welded on somewhere that is meant to act as a steering stop, but i cant remember why it dosent work LOL, welding a stop on will be an easy fix, as for the lever I sorta like it Reminds me of an old Hot Rod or something, where the guy driving is so hunched up cos the roof has been chopped yet the gear lever is so long it almost sticks out the sunroof I may keep it yet and just modify it so that it clears the bonnet,

only time will tell LOL
You can see in these 2 pics the steering stops welded to the front axle
The lever looks something very agricultural looks like it is off an old farm implement maybe a buckrake or plow
HaHa yes it does, and god knows where it was aquired from LOL
It just reminds me so much of my old man i dont think i could get rid of it,call me a setimental old fool LOL but i dont have a lot left to remind me of him
and somehow i posted that twice once with pics and once without
I dont think it would take much to get the bonnet to clear, slight bend in the lever, looks like the front would be more the problem. I would suggest a new clutch lining (i used cork on mine, same as the rear drive and is holding up really well so far) then just go back to a flat bar and maybe a spring instead of the solid link that is on there. so standard except for the lever.

yea i had a think about that,as i wasnt sure what was standard, if need be though i could weld a piece of RHS were original hinge attached to space the bonnet forward, the rear of the bonnet is rusty so needs repair anyway, so wouldnt be hard to extend that the same amount as the front moves forward. give it a longer snout, im sorta getting a steam punk Rat rod feel about it, keep that big lever, but put a dagger handle on it, weld up a steering wheel out of chain. put a set of vintage round headlights off the side of the bonnet, twisted wrought iron sissy bar up behind the seat, hmmm i need to think more about that, LOL I can already hear you guys yelling NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LOL finish off what Dad started ohhh a big set off Zoomie pipes out each side as the Exhaust LOL,
Please don't do mods that can't be reversed, collectors/restorers, will probably want to restore it back to original as there was so few of these originally built and still surviving to this day. Who knows what people will be wanting to repair in the next 100 years and even if you only part restore it that will help prevent somebody thinking it is just a rusty old pile of junk and send it to the scrap
I appeciate what your saying, None of what i am thinking would be irreversible, the mower is a bit of an Heirloom now as its on its 3rd generation in the same family and will become a 4th, I will come back and haunt my kids if they ever sell it LOL I might start a new trend LOL rat rod mowers
At the end of the day it is you're machine to do what you want, ive seen a few hot rod kinda mowers and to me it always looks tacky, but each to their own.
The original bracket looks to still be there on the frame, i dont think you would need to space the bonnet out, just make the clutch arm on the front more compact, with a new lining the clutch doesn't need much force.

I have included a pic of the standard setup.
WOW ok the original is a lot different to what i have LOL cheers for that info, will have a look into it
