Finally got round to looking this up Scotsman. Sorry for the delay.
You mentioned taking a diode out at the ignition switch. There is supposed to be one there (probably in the loom?) and it's a very likely culprit.It's position is important too. It has to be 'before' the junction shown in the diagram.
Is the diode you removed the Victa one? If not, I'd be trying to find the Victa one and testing/ replacing it. If the one you removed is the Victa one, replace it.
