I always thought the headlight surround was plastic and I could not understand why they were always complete and not smashed up. The fact they were made of alloy is the reason, but they must have been a costly component to manufacture and use as a bonnet ornament. I guess they had a good deal going with the company making the cutting decks so the bit on the front probably didn't cost them too much extra
