Joey If your replacing with of Magnetrons (electronic triggered coil) then no you don't need to replace. All though it advisable to remove the points and plug the activator pin hole you don't even have to do that. You would need to cut wire points trigger wire and tape as it would ground out the Magnetron coil.
Now if you putting back a points coil then renewing or replacing the points and condenser is advisable.
Magnetrons are more reliable than the point system as there is no moving parts other than the flywheel. Only one slight draw back and that is it takes slightly more rpms at start up to get things going but the other benefits out weight this. This starting rpms difference is usually not even noticeable.
