Hi all,

sorry if this is a bit of a basic question but I'm a bit of a newbie to Briggs and Stratton motor design. In my case, a 3hp B&S: Model 90502, Type 1056-01, Code 80061805.

On the plus side I've at least done some small things like the spark plug, pull the starter off and look at the governor flywheel, crank safety/shear pin, air filter, found the (old style) points ignition, look up the number codes, etc. But I digress...

I appear to have rust in the fuel tank. I though I saw a rust patch on the bottom of the tank one day, last time I looked some may have been floating in the (Sta-Bil-ised) fuel. The mower doesn't get much use- in Canberra once a week is heavy growth and I have a small yard- and can sit with fuel in the tank for some months. So my questions are below, please feel free to answer or point me in the right direction to find the answers!

  • What should I do- replace the tank or treat it, and if so, with what?
  • Is the tank easy to remove and how is it done?
  • Is there a fuel filter, also what is the fuel pick up system?
  • Any other suggestions?

Many thanks,
