Thanks for the advice. If I get it all apart (it's soaking in WD40 now) I'll certainly do all of the priming & painting first.
I've developed quite an interest in these mowers in the last couple of weeks and as it happens, they seem to attract others. A neighbour was walking his dog past my house the other evening and he saw me in the garage and asked what I was doing. I explained the story and he then told me that his Dad has an old SB 45 in his garden shed not five minutes from where I live. The mower hasn't been used for years and would be for sale. I'm going to look at it on the weekend
