Makes sense now, I found reference to a remote air filter option for the 4-stroke I was reffering to, and that is the setup they used to use for just that.
Looking at the difference in sun damage between the cap and filter, I would guess only the cap was replaced, the original would have looked just the same, but with a different sticker (V59)
