That’s a very handy bit of fabrication work. It looks like galvanised steel and, I agree, probably a little heavy.
I seriously thought about making one from sheet aluminium for one of my 1970’s side throw Victas, but the price of the sheet put me off.
Victa made a great looking steel catcher for the side throws back in the day. I’ve never seen one in the flesh. I guess they all rusted away.
