Most cordless drills are designed for intermittent duty: drill a hole, drive some screws, then rest. Continuous high‑load use (like spinning a mower reel for many minutes) will:

Heat the motor and electronics quickly, shortening tool life or causing thermal shutdown.

Drain batteries very fast, especially under high torque.

Increase the risk of sudden stall and wrist‑twisting kickback if the reel jams.

You can play with it as a short‑burst experiment, but as a practical “powered mower” solution, a drill will be under powered, hard on the tool, and not very durable.

Powering something with a drill is best with hexagonal shaft in chuck and you can hose clamp the chuck from coming loose.

Most people just fit a scooter electric motor , there are a few on Youtube.

Unfortunately I bought this Type of bushranger. A couple of cylinder mower specialist shops have advised me that the whole plastic system is crap and even replacing parts will continue the same old problem. Thier fix - get rid of it and buy one of the new Bushrangers aka Supaswift that is the proper old style scott bonnar system. My Bushranger version was made in NZ and Bushranger has now deleted this mower out of its lineup. I will try the shimming method.

I have an old Scott Bonnar reel mower which I am looking to give to a new home. The model no is 590012 and mower no on the plate is 03174. I have the catcher as well which I believe are hard to come by.

I restored it to the best of my capabilities, and it was functional & working up to a couple of years ago. Since then, it has been under cover in the shed.

It will suit someone looking for parts or looking to do a restoration project. Photos to follow.

You are spot on when you suggest if I use what I have, it will require multiple modifications.

I like the Trident Teasing Rake, so that's the way I'll go I think. Also a new front roller package that they also offer, has attracted my attention too, and it's stainless steel.

93 is a pin so that could be broken and if so it would need replacing.
